Does Medicare cover PCA3 test?
PCA3 testing is covered ONLY when all biopsies in previous encounter(s) are negative and when the patient or physician wants to avoid repeat biopsy (watchful waiting). When the physician plans to biopsy the prostate, MolDX will consider a PCA3 test as investigational and thus, not a covered Medicare benefit.
What is a PCA3 test?
The PCA3 test is a molecular assay that detects the mRNA of the DD3 gene expressed in prostate cells. The cells are obtained from patient urine samples after digital rectal exam (DRE). The PCA3 test is the ratio of PCA3 mRNA to PSA mRNA multiplied by 1,000.
How accurate is the PCA3 test?
PCA3 status correctly predicted positive biopsies 62% of the time with a sensitivity of 81% and specificity of 37%. When combining MRI and PCA3 tests, specificity increased to 60% and sensitivity decreased to 66%, with 64% accuracy.

At what age does Medicare stop paying for PSA test?

Medicare coverage Medicare covers PSA blood test and a DRE once a year for all men with Medicare age 50 and over. There is no co-insurance and no Part B deductible for the PSA test. For other services (including a DRE), the beneficiary would pay 20% of the Medicare-approved amount after the yearly Part B deductible.
